Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is the first six-month activity report of 2019\/20 budget year. The report is organized and presented by two main sections. In the first section, planned activities for the project period from July 2018 toJune2019 but executed or pending to be executed in July 2019 to June2020. In the next section, planned activities for the project period of July 2019 to2020 and their statuses are presented.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The budgets used in the tables below are original budget from 5 years approved project proposal on July 07 2018(AAU-Sida agreement). If it is approved, the modified budget we submitted after annual review meeting for the year of 2019\/20 will be used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>II. Planned Activities for 2018\/19 and executed in 2019\/20<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2018\/19 plan recruiting and enrolling 4 PhD students in Electrical Power and Control Engineering was planned. Some of the activities were transferred to 2019\/20 due to different reasons. The following table indicates status of activities transferred to 2019\/20 from 2018\/19.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A. Supervision capacity building training at Chalmers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two Ethiopian Professors were to take PhD supervisor capacity building course at Swedish University during 2018\/19.\u00a0 Tuition fee was budgeted to be 4500 SEK per professor. However, it was found out that the tuition fee for foreigners per person was about 20,000 SEK. The training should not be transferred any more as students are already enrolled and should benefit. Therefore; there has to be some rearrangement in budget to cover the tuition fee. Three arrangements in combination were done.<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Partial distance learning arranged to study lecture materials for some lectures.<\/li>\n<li>Some four days stay in Sweden reduced from stay in Sweden and the corresponding per-diem to cover the tuition fee difference of 15000 SEK per person.<\/li>\n<li>The yearly student work review and next year plan meeting in Sweden arranged to overlap with the course delivery time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Accordingly; four professors (two planned for 2018\/19 and two planned for 2019\/20) have registered for the courses at KTH Royal Institute of Technology to attend the course beginning February 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 B. Workshop Organization at Addis Ababa University<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yearly workshop, on which PhD students present their progress and proposal in the presence of professors, takes place at Addis Ababa University. The first workshop, budgeted for 2018\/19 took place in November 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0C. Professional conference Participation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Four supervising professors go for professional conference contributing paper each year. Three conference participation took place in August 2019 out of the four budgeted for 2018\/19. Twelve (12) PhD students\u2019 trip to Sweden <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Twelve PhD students will stay in Sweden at their corresponding professor\u2019s laboratory. 4 students are second year students who were enrolled in 2018\/19 and the other 8 recruited this year (2019\/20 academic year). The Sweden stays have been scheduled for all with their professors. Accordingly, all have applied for visa and air ticket purchased for them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>B. Laboratory Equipment purchase<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Laboratory equipment worth 218,000 SEK is planned to be purchased for this year. Specification completed and purchase requisitions have been raised according to government purchasing procedure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C. Accordingly, 4 PhD candidates have been enrolled through the following process as stipulated in the project section 2.1 which states \u201cAn announcement to recruit candidates to the program will be publicized before academic year 2018\/19. It has been agreed that student\u2019s supervisors (both Ethiopian and Swedish) shall interview candidates and select best ones based on their academic merits and preparedness and motivation for fulfillment of research task.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 a. Identification of the first four projects for the year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Based on the priority of the country and the involved professors\u2019 expertise, the following projects were selected from the list of projects in the proposal, through consultation amongst the involved professors as stated in the project agreement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Project No. 1:<\/strong> Balancing and grid integration of wind power<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Supervisors: Dr Mengesha Mamo and Professor Lennart S\u00f6der<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Project No. 2:<\/strong> Long-term strategic electricity and energy systems planning and modelling<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Supervisors: Dr. Getachew Bekele and Professor Erik Ahlgren<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Project No. 3:<\/strong> Hydro Power Operation and Planning<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Supervisors: Dr. Getachew Bekele and Professor Mikael Amelin<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Project No. 4: <\/strong>Mapping of natural and industrial pollution severity at locations of planned transmission corridors<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Supervisors: Dr. Mengesha Mamo and Professor Stanislaw Gubanski<\/p>\n<p><strong>b. Announcement for potential Candidates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the project, announcement for potential candidates was done officially through Addis Ababa University Web-page and School of Electrical and Computer Engineering social media. The application time was from early June 2018 to July 25<sup>th<\/sup> 2018. About 16 candidates applied through the Addis Ababa University registrar and shortlisted to eight by reviewing the academic credentials of the applicants, 2 for each project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>c. Selection of Students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two AAU professors, Dr Mengesha and Dr Getachew traveled to Sweden, to interview the candidates and select one for each project. Accordingly, for Project 1; supervisors Professor Lennart and Dr Mengesha selected Kena Likasa from Adama University, for Project 2; supervisors Professor Erik and Dr Getachew Bekele selected student Dawit Habtu, for Project 3; Professor Mikael Ameline and Dr. Getachew Bekele selected student Firehiwot and for Project 4; Professor Stanslaw Gubanski and Dr Mengesha Selected student Berhanu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>d. Admission Process to Addis Ababa University<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The selected students passed through the admission process of Addis Ababa University regulations including taking examinations on language and general knowledge administered by the university for its PhD applicants. After passing the examination the four are given admission letters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>e. Joining their KTH and Chalmers Professors Laboratory research team and Course taking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Starting November 2018, process for visa started for all students to travel to their corresponding professors\u2019 laboratories starting January 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Student Dawit managed to get visa and went to Chalmers starting January while Berhanu went February, 2019. Kena and Hiwot went to KTH March 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All students took 2 courses each on average. Berhanu spent four months, March to June 2019 at ABB in Ludvica. All students returned to Ethiopian end of June 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f. Presentation on Workshop at KTH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kena, Hiwot and Dawit presented their progress to their professors on workshop which took place on June 13<sup>th<\/sup> 2019 at KTH Royal institute of Technology. Similarly, Berhanu presented his progress report in the presence of his professors and ABB supervisors at ABB Ludivica factory on May 23<sup>rd<\/sup> 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Recruitment of 8 PhD Candidates for 2019\/20<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the second academic year, eight PhD candidates are under final stage of admission process. Four of the eight candidates are lecturers at Addis Ababa University while the other three are lecturers at four different public Universities; namely, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, Jigjiga University, Wello University while the last female is from Ethiopian Electric power.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I.
